Windsurfing: West Mersea Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: F3/5 Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny / cloud Max Speed: 27.21 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 26.8 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
3rd session out in wind and it was brilliant. Arrive early 9.30 (poss had
to leave) but tide was very low, so it had to be a long wait. Had a great
carpark space for the motorhome and trailer on the green which is a
whopping 32ft. Sea was flat wind around 10kts and felt to be building.
After brekky went for a ride and gave the other whats apper's some duff
info, thinking the tide was coming in! Rode all round old Mersea then on
return Chippy Andy M Pete Stuart, saw Pete Rowe and another couple of old
Mersea mates. Faffed around sail choice 7.8 set light or 8.5 set flat. Andy
had 2 sails out 7.3 / 7.8 but both Peter and Andy went 7.3 and I made a
bad choice on 8.5. Had 4/5 nice runs on the Bolt 135 now set up de-tuned
straps in and much more comfortable.
The broad reach was towards Point Clear and the beat towards the power st.
Water was flat either side with nice swells in the middle, perfect. Fast
sailors were near the club house end so went there, had great reaches, then
the wind really kicked in after an hour and so was well over. Had to beach
and re-rig the sail flat to get back, and so lost 30 minutes. Even the flat
sail was too much, so rigged 7.8, but really 7.3 would have been ideal.
Now in control had good 26 kts run for what seemed miles towards PC,
brilliant. Used a Goya Mk 7.8 set to manufacturers markings and it was
brilliant. The Goya Bolt 135 was lit up in flat bits, -singing 46 fin
though - so prob dropping speed.
Went back up to Andy Mex Bolt 125 or 115 not sure and Peter on his new Fox
120. Mex flew past me as my wind dropped to a crawl, but as I built up
again, chased down the Fox for an almighty reach towards PC with neither of
us backing off. Nothing in it side by side the crafty Peter saw my
intentions to kill his wind and bore off even more, to definitely pull away
from the Bolt and the very broad reaches. I couldn't gain anymore so we
gybed. Pete and Andy went up to old Mersea, saw Chippy but decide to slow
beat towards them. Loads of sailors out and saw one guy on a kite foil
board blasting around one hand on kite the other hanging out for some
extreme beats. He went past me in the light bits easily clocking 20kts.
Looks difficult but easy for him! Wind dropped close to high so switched
back to 8.5. Tried to find Pete and Andy at old Mersea - Chippy had packed.
Couldn't them so blasted back as the wind freshened. had a couple of rain
squalls for 10 mins but great fun day - finishing off with a seafood
platter from the old West Mersea Oyster Co.
Still tweaking kit - and not happy with 28cm/30cm harness lines, as too
long. After years on 28's I must be shrinking as I accidentally unhooked
several times, so shorter lines now.
